I'd
build a big beautiful house. But I'm not. Even if I had the finest tools, all
the latest technology, the best literature on the subject, and people telling
me it's a snap if I buy their online carpentry courses...I still wouldn't be able
to manage more than a leaky shack with a shaky foundation and crooked beams.
Why?
Because carpentry is a craft that takes years and years of hands-on work, training
and experience. It's not a skill you acquire overnight.
The
same is true for copywriting. (Contrary to what many would have you believe.)
It's
easy to fall into the trap of saying "Okay, we'll save a few bucks and write
the copy ourselves. We can do it."
Sure
you can. Many already have. And what they've written is just like the house I
would have built. The Internet is littered with sites whose badly constructed,
unprofessional copy is an immediate tip-off to visitors that this is a business
that really doesn't have its act together.
And
if they can get past that, homemade copy is usually so poorly expressed, the reader
often doesn't have a clue what you're trying to say...much less sell. Improper
grammar, misspelled words, typos, and unappealing layout only make it worse.
Imagine
walking into a store whose merchandise was scattered all over the place, paint
peeling everywhere, and a clerk who couldn't answer your simplest questions. Would
you want to do business in that place?
That's
the impression amateurish copy makes. And while you may think you're saving money
by writing it yourself, or hiring a self-proclaimed instant copywriter on the
cheap, you'll pay for it dearly in lower response rates, fewer return visits and
an enduring negative image. Who needs that?
Do
yourself, and your business, a big favor.
Hire
a proven, experienced, highly creative professional copywriter. One who can present
your product or service clearly and compellingly. The copy you get will pay for
itself many times over in higher response rates, more return visitors to your
site, and a polished, professional image that will quickly grow your business
and reputation.
Like
a master carpenter, I've spent many years perfecting my craft. I write copy for
top national brands and blue chip companies. But I also work with new and smaller
businesses. It keeps me sharp, makes the work more interesting, presents new challenges.
My
clients benefit greatly from this desire to break new ground, as it keeps them
one step ahead of their competition. And that's especially important when it comes
to writing copy for the Internet. People surfing the Web don't have the time or
patience to decipher what you're trying to say. The copy must jump out and grab
them instantly, hold their attention and keep them hooked so you can close the
sale. The same goes for email sales messages, especially given the growing aversion
to spam.
